Redo Rescue: Backup and Recovery Made Easy
This is a beta release based on Debian 11.
For this major upgrade, the only change applied is the base OS and any package requirements required to complete the migration to Debian Bullseye. The underlying application and all functionality remains identical to the last release (3.0.2). Please note that newer packages, particularly partclone
or sfdisk
, may contain breaking changes we are not aware of.
Many (if not most) of the issues reported with the 3.0 releases were focused on the Debian 10's lack of support in the kernel for more recent hardware, which shows a login prompt instead of the GUI. We are hoping this release based on Debian 11 will fix these issues for the majority of users.
This bugfix release corrects two important issues:
Given the significance of these issues and the large number of systems affected, an immediate release is warranted.
This release enables the addition of non-free firmware in the base image.
Many users reported booting to a console login prompt. This is because Xorg on Debian 10 requires non-free firmware to function in many cases. Adding this package will ensure that users can boot all the way into the graphical user interface. No other changes were made.
This release marks a major milestone as we upgrade to the Debian 10 base system for ISO images.
This means expanded hardware support, UEFI images with Secure Boot, more recent binaries for partclone
and all other included tools, and more. Non-free linux firmware is not enabled by default, but the option to add it can be changed in the make
file.
Changes in this release are limited only to upgrading the base operating system. As of this release, the application itself remains identical to the 2.0.7 release. The 2.0.x series based on Debian 9 will continue to exist as a stable release, but will not receive future updates (unless a major bug is discovered).
This is likely to be the final release in the 2.0 series, which is based on Debian 9.
Changes in this release:
less
package (to allow advanced users to list partition types within fdisk
)This release was deemed fairly urgent in order to correct the error reported when verifying a partition that does not contain a valid filesystem (such as "Microsoft reserved" partitions, which contain raw binary data). Partclone does not offer a way to verify the contents of these images since they have no filesystem headers. Even though the data is intact, previous releases of Redo would report a verification error that leads users to worry their data is invalid or lost, when in fact everything is fine and can be restored without error.
This is primarily a bugfix release prior to moving to the Debian 10 base, although some minor features were introduced for those who may require them on this release.
The most important fix is for issue https://github.com/redorescue/redorescue/issues/44, which prevented verifying or restoring images found in paths that contained spaces, apostrophes, or similar special characters.
fdpowermon
, which seems to be causing some UI quirks.xfce4-power-manager
to permit power and brightness control for laptops. This release adds a fix for Windows users that were finding their system time had been offset after using Redo due to the way the system clock is handled by Linux and Windows. NTP updates were applied that caused the clock to be off by a few hours after booting back into Windows.
All changes:
partclone
This is the final release planned for the 2.0 series, which is based on Debian 9 (stretch). Future releases will be based on Debian 10 (buster) to add support for UEFI and newer hardware.
This release addresses changes with the way sfdisk
data was exported from previous versions. This is an important fix for restoring any backups created with version 1.0.x that contained extended partitions. Other additions:
/root/enable-ssh
)Also, questions from users suggests that many have been confused by partclone
error messages relayed verbatim, e.g. Input/output error
, and incorrectly concluded that Redo Rescue was at fault. These error messages have been improved to suggest possible causes such as hardware failure, network disconnection, and corrupted filesystems.
This release includes an important update to fix mounting network shares that required a username and password, as well as corrections to the way FTP passwords with special characters were handled.
This release includes important updates for mounting certain filesystems that caused the application to hang. Also included are many user interface improvements, including a prominent warning about remapping partitions to new targets.
