Hi all,

Can't believe it's already October! Going to keep this update super short.

Last week was particularly tough and scattered, @paked moved back home from SF -> Sydney, @msw got some new website features started, and I wrangled together two grant proposals.

Stats:

  • 34 clubs met w/ 511 members across meetings
  • 3 clubs onboarded
  • 2 clubs had their first meeting

General update: we're expanding the global HQ team and had our first real meeting last week. Say hi to @athul, @mj66, and @lachlanjc (they're joining @paked, @msw, and myself)!

It’s a Max episode! Now that Zach and Harrison have given updates, I figured I’d try writing this week’s.

Here’s a list of all the new bells and whistles we’ve got in store for you fine folks:

  • Know how we created a new Slack invite form last week? Now club leaders can generate their own Slack invite forms using an @orpheus command! As a leader, you can automatically add anyone who uses your invite link to your club’s usergroup. Find out how to use it by running @orpheus help and finding it in the list of commands.
  • School network blocking your favorite high school coding community website? Just go to https://bulckcah.com (the reverse of https://hackclub.com) to reach our website on networks that block websites with “hack” in the name
  • Zach submitted a grant proposal he’s been wrestling with for a while now… profit?

And here are some of the misc changes we’ve made:

  • Made some fixes to last week’s Slack invite system, so now you can refresh the page without losing your invite (big improvement)
  • Our monolithic codebase has it’s own art now

For anyone who isn’t following the #shipit channel on Slack, I wanted to show off some project highlights I’ve seen in there:

Now onto the stats! This week, 24 clubs met across 14 states and 4 countries. In total, 352 members were in attendance. We’ve onboarded 3 new clubs that will increase that number in the next few weeks.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good treasure hunt, so instead of wrapping this up with 3 links this week, I figured I’d leave you with a clue instead:

There's a hidden message in the new Slack features. You’ll get the gist of it when you see it.

Zach’s fallen asleep after crunching on a grant proposal for 30 hours straight, so it’s Harrison here to write the weekly Hack Club update.

Before we return back to our normally scheduled content, I wanted to talk about some changes the staff decided to make to the Slack (hopefully going live around the time this gets sent out). So, here we go:

  • HACKBOT IS DEAD. LONG LIVE ORPHEUS! Yeah, that’s right. Hackbot is no more. Well he is, he’s just had a bit of a shift in identity. @hackbot is now @orpheus (you all know Orpheus right? He's the last dinosaur in existence... who also happens to be our mascot).
  • SOME CHANNELS WERE RENAMED! #meta has become #hq, and #random is now #lounge. We’re hoping the new names are much clearer for people who just joined the Slack.
  • ORPHEUS IS A FANCY WELCOME MAT. We’ve now set up @orpheus (previously @hackbot) to greet everyone who joins the Slack, instead of just new leaders. We’re planning on working on a feature where different clubs can change the greeting to whatever they want. Stay tuned for more updates :)

We also turned our Slack invite page into a fully fledged Slack sign-up page. I’ll try skipping the boring technical mumbo-jumbo, but basically we create your account for you using a temporary email address, set some sane defaults, and then change the email address to the original one which you requested (ie. not the temporary one).

Stats:

  • 19 club meetings, with 340 members in attendance (up from 13 club with 260 members last week)
  • 18 clubs were onboarded last week, and we’ve set up a system to respond to all applications within 24 hours!

Instead of the normal reading list, I’m going to include some of my favourite photos of cute animals that I’ve found browsing the internet this week (although if you really want something to read, I’d suggest this article).

School year is getting started! We had 6 new clubs start meeting last week, leaving us at 12 clubs actively meeting so far.

Congratulations to Mason High School (@megan, @anniewang, and @cravend) for having the highest attendance last week, with 70 attendees at their first meeting.

Stats:

  • 12 club meetings in 8 states and 2 countries. 241 people in attendance, up from 141 members at meetings over the past two weeks.
  • 8 new clubs onboarded in 7 states. Say hi on Slack!

Community:

Content:

Misc:

  • @hackbot now uses Guggy instead of Giphy for GIFs. Try saying @hackbot gif goats in #random to try it out.
  • @hackbot check-ins are now automatically scheduled, guaranteeing that you'll get them on time at 5PM on Friday (sorry for the delay last week!)

And this week's reading list (this week's theme is the first amendment):
