DarkThumbs Versions Save

Adds thumbnail preview to Windows Explorer for EPUB, FB2 and Kindle ebooks; CBZ, CBR, RAR and ZIP archives.

V1.7

  • For archives (not ebooks): Add the option to skip "scanlation" files and seek "cover" files (see issue #43). "scanlation" files are often added to manga archives by "scanlation" groups, and the names often includes "credits", "recruit", "logo" and others.

  • Rework the manager. Addresses issue #66, adds the scanlation/cover options, and now uses tooltips for explanation of the advanced options:

manager_17

  • Partially address issue #34. Shows a partial cover for the "advanced" versions of "Standard Ebooks". [See issue #34 for more details]
  • Update the libmobi library.
  • Fix a bug where the archive icon could randomly appear even if set to off

V1.6

A minor release, to fix some small issues and add some small features.

  1. FB2 / Mobi options are now dis-entangled (Issue #59)
  2. Support SOLID .rar archives (Issue #30)
  3. Remove the context-sensitive help support from the manager (Issue #28)
  4. For ZIP / CBZ / EPUB, use the latest Windows graphics for thumbnails [supports more image formats if the necessary windows codecs are installed].

V1.5.1

Fixes a problem with the installer whereby DarkThumbs ... wouldn't work!

Also restores the "Show archive icon" and corrects the version value.

Reminder: .mobi support is not included in the 32-bit version. Reminder: to upgrade DarkThumbs, you must first uninstall the existing version via "Add / Remove Programs".

If you find DarkThumbs useful, please consider buying me a coffee!

Special thanks to @vivadavid and @dudelstein for trying V1.5 and pointing out my bugs!

V1.4.2

Fixes issue #42, where Windows Explorer would "freeze" at some point after thumbnails had been created.

The installer includes a new dependency, vcruntime140_1.dll, which doesn't seem to be installed by Microsoft's runtime package.

NOTE: at this time, the 32-bit (x86) version does not include MOBI support!

V1.4.1L

This is the V1.4.1 release but with logging added. It might be helpful when trying to identify problem files.

To install it,

  1. If you haven't already, download and install DarkThumbs V1.4.1.
  2. Make a copy of CBXShell.dll which you installed (e.g. in c:\program files\DarkThumbs).
  3. Download the attached CBXShell.dll. Copy it over the existing CBXShell.dll.

To view the log messages, you need to use the attached DebugView program, dbgview64. [You can download the full package from Microsoft].

My recommended steps would be: A. Close all Windows Explorer windows. B. Wipe the thumbnail cache using Disk Cleanup. C. Run dbgview64. D. Open a Windows Explorer window and set the view to show icons. Navigate to folders containing books.

DarkThumbs should show a message for each book examined but logs nothing extra on success. On failure or exception, a message should appear.

You can click on the message(s) in dbgview to copy them with Ctrl+C. Ctrl+X clears everything.

Fix issue #36: ignore any __MACOSX folder in archives.

V1.4-rel

NOTE: new version of the installer (October 19, 2021). Really, really heavily tested, no Explorer crash!

I've made changes which appear to fix the Windows Explorer stability issues - at least my testing hasn't found any problems!

Also includes:

  • Adding AZW, AZW3 kindle format files as part of MOBI support
  • Fix a minor install issue (installing to C:\program files\CBXShell, should be DarkThumbs)

V1.3-rel

  1. Added thumbnail [not tooltip] support for MOBI files. [part of issue #11 ]
  2. Fetching thumbnails for EPUB files should be much, much faster now. E.g. one test went from 82 seconds to 10 seconds!
  3. More stability fixes.
  4. Deal with URL-encoded epub titles.

V1.2-rel

Some more EPUB cover images should be found now; tooltips now correctly display non-ASCII titles.

  1. Handle non-western-european titles (displayed in the tooltip when hovering on an epub). Addresses Issue #10
  2. Fix a bug concerning archive layout preventing some covers from being found. Part of Issue #9.
  3. Add support for epubs missing the <meta> tag but which have a "cover-image" item in the <manifest>. Part of Issue #9.

[Skipping the 32-bit installer unless explicitly asked for.]

V1.1-rel

Implements several bugfixes.

  1. Fix crash which could happen with EPUBs containing a large number of files.
  2. Performance improvements when creating thumbnails.
  3. Fix for Windows Explorer instability problems.
  4. Add support for another style of title tags.
  5. Add "webp" as a supported image format for thumbnails. [These will be visible if you have the appropriate Windows codec installed.]
