Mac Linux USB Loader Versions Save

Boot Linux on your Mac, easily

v3.3-beta2

I am pleased to announce the second Mac Linux USB Loader 3.3 beta. Version 3.3 is designed to be simpler, faster, and easier to use, and the second beta expands on the work that was done in the first beta. This beta release contains a fair number of changes from the previous one:

  • Fixed a crash on 10.8 (issue #122)
  • Updated the localizations for Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and German
  • Mac Linux USB Loader is now available in Norwegian Bokmal
  • Warn the user if their ISO is too big to fit on a FAT32-formatted volume (issue #123)
  • Made the installation wizard’s sidebar partially transparent
  • Code quality improvements

In line with the new security policies Apple is pushing for the upcoming macOS Sierra, Mac Linux USB Loader is now being distributed as a signed xip file. I am still learning how to use this format, so this file may not extract on your computer. If not, right-click on it and select Open and tell OS X to extract the file anyway, or remove the Quarantine bit from Terminal.

Furthermore, please send feedback. You can do that by filing a bug report here on GitHub or by emailing me.

v3.3-beta1

I am pleased to announce the release of Mac Linux USB Loader 3.3 beta. Version 3.3 is designed to be simpler, faster, and easier to use. Many lines of code have been removed and the code that remains has been optimized. This beta release contains a large number of changes:

  • Updated Enterprise to version 0.4, which is currently in beta
  • Added an autoboot feature, allowing the user to bypass the boot menu and load their Linux distribution directly
  • Support Linux Mint 18
  • Redesigned the About window and removed the distracting scrolling animation
  • Redesigned the persistence setup window
  • Removed the extraneous "Begin Installation" button in the wizard; it has now been incorporated in the Back and Forward buttons
  • Added the option to choose between Stable and Beta update channels
  • The Enterprise sources preference pane is now hidden by default, since most users aren't using that feature
  • Removed the option allowing the user to select the maximum number of download operations; the operating system should determine this, not the user
  • Show application credits and acknowledgements in the application, not in TextEdit
  • Removed unused image assets
  • et cetera, et cetera

I am still learning how to use this format, so this file may not extract on your computer. v3.2.2

I am pleased to announce the release of Mac Linux USB Loader 3.2.2. This release patches Mac Linux USB Loader to ensure compatibility with Application Transport Security policies in OS X El Capitan, since the vast majority of distribution download mirrors do not support secure encrypted connections. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is now supported, and additionally includes some localization fixes for Dutch.

This release is signed with a new security certificate, unlike all previous releases, and ships with an updated version of the Sparkle framework. Neither of these should affect end-users.

v3.2.1

I am pleased to announce the release of Mac Linux USB Loader 3.2.1. The primary focus of this release was bug fixes and improvements, but there are a few new things to see as well:

  • Mac Linux USB Loader is now available in Japanese. If you're interested in translating Mac Linux USB Loader into your own language, please see the Wiki article on translating Mac Linux USB Loader.
  • Mac Linux USB Loader now supports installing to portable hard drives, and not just USB drives (thanks to @threebytesfull for this change)
  • For users who reported Mac Linux USB Loader opening in the wrong language, you will be happy to know that the issue should be fixed now

This new release of Mac Linux USB Loader now retrieves update information from my own web server instead of from GitHub. This should not affect end users but may be important if you have strict firewall rules.

Hello, everyone. Long time no see. I am happy to announce the release of the Mac Linux USB Loader 3.1 beta. This is strictly pre-release, and I do not recommend upgrading unless you have some experience dealing with beta software.

The pre-release contains the following changes from the current version:

  • Updated to include version 0.3.0 of Enterprise, also a pre-release
  • Added support for two languages, Spanish and Dutch
  • Removed unnecessary menu options from the menu bar
  • The Enterprise source location editor in the Preferences dialog now shows localized paths to the Enterprise source
  • Enterprise sources can now be renamed (except the default)
  • Write the new Enterprise configuration file format
  • Fixes for users with case-sensitive file systems
  • Updated Ubuntu and Elementary OS version support (mirrors for these distributions will be available upon the final release of this version)

And finally (drumroll please)...

  • Kali Linux support

The final version should be shipping very soon. Please take this opportunity to try and report any bugs which you might find.

Note about Kali: There are bugs in the current version of Kali which stop it from working on older Macs with nVidia graphics cards. I am in touch with the Kali developers and we are working to fix the problem.

v3.0.2

Another week, another bug fix. :+1: I am pleased to announce version 3.0.2 of Mac Linux USB Loader.

This release fixes two issues which have been plaguing certain users of Mac Linux USB Loader:

  • Issue #63: Fixes an issue whereby a configuration file would not be created on the specified USB drive
  • Issue #62: Fixes an issue whereby Enterprise could not be found, aborting the installation

This release also contains a number of important improvements to the installation wizard, making it a little bit easier to use. Specifically, the Back and Forward are now enabled and disabled based off of what screen you are on, etc. The program also prints more log messages to aid finding more bugs in the future.

v3.0.1

Hello, everyone. This is a super quick release to address some issues with running Mac Linux USB Loader on Mavericks and below. Here's the (incredibly short) change log:

  • Fixed a crash for users of Mavericks and below which occurred when you tried to open an ISO file to create a live USB
  • In the installation wizard, the USB drive icons are set to be how they look in the Finder to make identification easier

That's it for now. Please click Learn More... to be directed to my webpage where you can download the new version.
